The dialogue between Russia and Europe
Throughout its history, Russian painting has maintained a constant dialogue with Europe.
While in the 18th and 19th centuries, Russian artists were inspired by European neoclassicism and romanticism, by the 20th century, it was the Russian avant-garde that influenced Europe.
Kandinsky, who lived in Germany, left a lasting mark on expressionism and lyrical abstraction. Malevich, with his suprematism, influenced artists such as Mondrian and paved the way for constructivism, a movement crucial to modern design.
Thus, Russian art, far from being a mere reflection of Europe, managed to carve out its own path and redefine some of the major artistic movements of the 20th century.
